Glossary
Here are some definitions that might help you if you’re just starting out. Using these terms will make you sound like you know what you’re talking about, thereby convincing many bookers to give you a better rate!
Act -A comedian’s standard performance; this term generally refers to the topics the comedian covers and his/her point-of-view; a.k.a, “routine.”
Bit - A more modern term for “joke” – the days of “three guys walk into a bar” are long gone; comedians these days generally make observations and comment on them.
Comedian -A professional entertainer who amuses by relating anecdotes, acting out comical situations, engaging in humorous repartee, etc. [Dictionary.com]
Comic – See Comedian.
Desi - A person whose lineage descends from the Indian Subcontinent; a more esoteric term for South Asian; the PC term that includes people from countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, et al.
Feature -The second person to perform on a standard 3-comedian night at a comedy club; generally performs 20 – 30 minutes; follows the MC and precedes the headliner; a.k.a., “middler.”
Gig - A show or an engagement.
Headliner – The third person to perform on a standard 3-comedian night at a comedy club; generally performs anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes; follows the feature; a.k.a., “closer.”
MC -1. The first person to perform on a standard 3-comedian night at a comedy club; generally performs 5 to 15 minutes; precedes the feature; a.k.a., “opener.” 2. Master of Ceremonies – host of an event.
Routine - See Act.
Schtick - A characteristic attribute, talent, trait, gimmick, or point-of-view/perspective that is helpful in securing recognition or attention.
Set -A comedian’s specific performance on any given show.
